Systematic Optimization Approaches to Improve Precision of Dalian Shot Blasting Processing
Shot blasting is a key process that uses high-speed projectile flow to impact workpiece surfaces for surface cleaning, stress strengthening or surface modification. It is widely applied in machinery manufacturing, aerospace, auto parts and other industries. Its precision is not merely dimensional tolerance, but a comprehensive indicator including surface uniformity, geometric tolerance and uniformity of residual stress. Conventional extensive shot blasting often leads to uneven impact, workpiece deformation and surface defects. Systematic adjustments covering equipment upgrading, shot control, process optimization, fixture adaptation and closed-loop quality management are required to raise processing precision.
First, intelligent upgrading of shot blasting equipment. Traditional tumble and overhead chain shot blasting machines cannot achieve precise positioning. Numerically controlled shot blasting systems are recommended, mainly equipped with six-axis industrial robots or servo-driven programmable nozzles. Pre-set paths precisely control the blasting position, angle and coverage of projectiles. For complex curved parts such as aero-engine blades, robots adjust nozzle posture according to surface contours to ensure uniform impact density across all areas, preventing geometric errors caused by insufficient or excessive blasting. Meanwhile, high-efficiency shot separation systems shall be upgraded. Combining air classification and magnetic separation, broken shots, scale and other impurities are accurately removed to avoid indentations and out-of-tolerance roughness caused by shots of inconsistent particle sizes, laying a solid equipment foundation for precision improvement.
Second, standardized management of blasting shots. The material, particle size and roundness of shots directly determine the consistency of impact effects. To improve shot blasting precision, customized shots with high roundness and particle size deviation ≤0.02 mm shall be adopted. For precision components, cast steel shots or stainless steel shots are preferred to avoid plastic deformation of aluminum shots. Shot hardness shall match workpiece hardness with hardness difference within HRC 5, preventing surface damage from overly hard shots and uneven residual stress from overly soft shots. A regular shot replacement cycle shall be established. Broken shots are screened out periodically to guarantee batch consistency and reduce workpiece deformation induced by uneven impact stress.
Third, precise control of process parameters. Blasting speed, blasting angle and blasting duration are core parameters, which shall be quantified according to workpiece material, thickness and precision requirements. For thin-walled precision parts, blasting speed is set at 25–30 m/s (15% lower than standard value) to avoid deformation from excessive impact force. Blasting angle is maintained at 45°–60° (programmable angles for complex surfaces) to realize uniform distribution of impact stress. Closed-loop timers control blasting duration, with timing error within 0.1 second per workpiece to eliminate surface coverage deviation among batches. In addition, finite element simulation is used to predict blasting deformation in advance. For slender parts and thin plates prone to deformation, machining allowance or blasting sequence can be adjusted to compensate deformation and enhance geometric accuracy.
Fourth, adaptive optimization of fixtures and closed-loop quality control. Customized flexible fixtures matching workpiece contours are adopted for clamping to avoid deformation caused by clamping stress and blasting vibration. For example, hydraulic positioning fixtures are used for automotive gears to ensure even stress without local compression deformation. A closed-loop precision inspection system shall be established: benchmark dimensions are measured by coordinate measuring machines before blasting, and geometric tolerances as well as surface roughness are rechecked after blasting. Once deformation exceeds tolerance, parameters such as shot size and blasting speed are adjusted accordingly, forming closed-loop management of “parameter-quality-adjustment” to continuously boost processing precision.
At present, adopted by aerospace structural parts, precision bearings and other fields, this optimization solution enables geometric tolerances within 0.02 mm and surface roughness deviation ≤0.2 μm after shot blasting, fully satisfying strict requirements on surface consistency and geometric precision in high-precision manufacturing and laying a foundation for the reliability of relevant components.
