Blackening surface treatment generally refers to the oxidizing blackening process for steel workpieces. A compact ferroferric oxide film with a thickness of approximately 1 to 5 microns forms through reactions in alkaline oxidant solution. It delivers core functions including moderate rust resistance, matte decorative finish and anti-reflection performance. Featuring simple procedures, low equipment investment and minimal impact on dimensional accuracy of parts, it serves as a basic alternative surface treatment for steel products and applies to core components across diverse industries.
In general machinery manufacturing, blackening is a standard process for shaft parts, gears, threaded fasteners (bolts, nuts, screws), and small hydraulic components (valve spools, joints, sealing seats). Most of these parts operate in humid, dusty or oil-contaminated working conditions. Although the blackening film offers inferior anti-corrosion performance compared with electroplating, it meets requirements for moderately corrosive environments. Its ultra-thin thickness preserves component tolerances and eliminates assembly errors at precision mating areas, making it ideal for mass-produced standard fasteners and small mechanical fittings. Moreover, for exposed structural components of agricultural machinery and construction machinery such as track plates and frame connectors, blackening drastically cuts production costs while improving outdoor weather resistance, striking a good balance between cost efficiency and practicality.
Blackening is widely adopted in hardware tools and daily hardware. After blackening treatment, hand tools including screwdrivers, adjustable spanners, wire cutters and electrician pliers gain a matte black coating that prevents rust and eliminates glaring reflection during operation, catering to electricians and maintenance staff working under variable lighting conditions. For construction and household hardware such as lock panels, hinges, drawer slides and cabinet handles, appearance and durability are key priorities. The sleek black finish of blackening fits modern home styles. Compared with painting and electrophoresis, blackening boasts stronger coating adhesion, resisting peeling caused by friction and scratches with low maintenance costs, suitable for mass production of architectural hardware.
Blackening demonstrates prominent advantages for precision instrument components. High-precision parts such as clockwork pinions, hairspring shafts, indicator spindles and adjusting screws of precision meters demand surface treatments without dimensional alteration. The micro-thin blackening film imposes no influence on assembly accuracy. Meanwhile, its matte black surface reduces internal light reflection and prevents stray light from interfering with meter readings. For optical instruments including metal brackets and adjustment knobs of telescopes and microscopes, the light-eliminating property of blackening effectively suppresses reflection between lenses to optimize imaging quality — a core advantage hard to replicate by other coatings.
Military and security equipment imposes stringent requirements on the concealment and reliability of metal parts, for which blackening acts as an essential process. Core firearm components such as barrels, bolts and firing pins, as well as breechblocks and cradle connectors of artillery, feature matte black surfaces after blackening to avoid light reflection that may expose targets in field operations. The ferroferric oxide film withstands harsh environments with high temperature, high humidity and sandstorms and enhances rust protection. In the security sector, blackening applied to explosion-proof electrical equipment and metal reinforcements for bulletproof vests improves wear resistance and averts sparking from friction, complying with explosion-proof safety standards.
Beyond the above sectors, blackening is frequently used for industrial articles such as small sheet metal parts, electrical cabinets and server brackets. The highly flexible process accommodates steel workpieces of various shapes. Overall, thanks to low costs, high compatibility with precision requirements and versatile functions, blackening remains a fundamental surface treatment for steel products. With the development of eco-friendly blackening formulations, its application scope will keep expanding to satisfy demands from more industries.
