Can Dalian Sandblasting Effectively Improve Workpiece Wear Resistance?
In machinery manufacturing, construction machinery, auto parts and other fields, workpiece wear resistance directly determines product service life and reliability. As a widely used surface treatment process, sandblasting’s effect on wear resistance has long attracted industry attention. The answer is yes, yet the outcome relies on proper process design and material matching.
Sandblasting works by blasting high-speed abrasives (brown fused alumina, quartz sand, steel grit, etc.) onto workpiece surfaces at 0.2–0.8 MPa. High-frequency particle impact alters the surface microstructure, stress state and topography — these changes are key to better wear resistance.
First, sandblasting introduces residual compressive stress. High-speed grit impact triggers severe plastic deformation in the surface layer, generating massive dislocations and slips to form residual compressive stress. Unlike tensile stress that easily emerges during service, residual compressive stress offsets 20%–40% of applied tensile load, strongly inhibiting initiation and propagation of microcracks during wear. Especially under alternating loads (gears, shafts), such stress delays fatigue wear and sustains long-term wear stability.
Second, sandblasting induces surface work hardening and grain refinement. Repeated grit impact breaks original surface grains into ultrafine (nanoscale) structures and markedly raises surface hardness. For ordinary medium carbon steel, untreated surface hardness is around 200 HV; properly sandblasted surfaces reach 260–300 HV. Higher hardness directly strengthens resistance to abrasive cutting and plastic deformation. Since abrasive wear originates from hard particles cutting soft surfaces, increased hardness boosts cutting resistance by 30%–50%, serving as the core contributor to improved wear performance.
Besides, sandblasting optimizes surface lubrication topography. It removes scale, tool marks and other defects to form uniform, dense micro-roughness. This texture retains lubricant during friction and builds stable boundary lubrication films, preventing direct metal contact under dry friction and reducing adhesive wear. For instance, sandblasted automotive piston rings double oil storage capacity, cut friction coefficient by 15% and lower oil consumption significantly.
Industrial applications have proven its merits. Construction machinery buckets and teeth treated with brown fused alumina see 40% higher surface hardness, extending service life from 3 months to 8–10 months. Sandblasted automotive crankshaft journals achieve 3× better wear resistance and 60% less regrinding frequency. Sandblasted precision injection mold cavities gain 2.5× higher surface wear resistance with greatly improved dimensional stability of molded parts.
Nevertheless, wear improvement is not fixed; proper process parameters are critical. Sharp-edged abrasives deliver stronger strengthening than round ones, yet excessive blasting pressure creates porous surface layers and accelerates wear. Soft materials (pure aluminum, copper alloys) require low pressure and fine grit to avoid surface damage.
In summary, with suitable parameters, Dalian sandblasting effectively enhances workpiece wear resistance by modifying surface stress, microstructure and topography. Featuring low cost, high efficiency and broad applicability, it is an important industrial surface strengthening method for wear improvement.
